Ajahn Tiradhammo -
The Biography

Venerable
Tiradhammo (Ian Adams) was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, in 1949.
Whilst reading engineering, geology and geography at the University of British
Columbia, he interrupted his studies to undertake a long overland trip in the
Middle East, culminating in a cycle ride from Pakistan to Sri Lanka. He stayed
for a fortnight at the Island Hermitage in Sri Lanka, and spent a further
month practising meditation at Kanduboda Meditation Centre with Bhikkhu Sivoli.
He
returned to Canada and, after completing one more year of university, decided
to travel to Thailand for further meditation practice. After a further 5
months travel he arrived in March 1973 at Wat U-Mong forest monastery in
Chiang Mai, where he entered an extended period of intensive meditation. Four
months later he became a novice and took upasampada one year later at
Wat Meung Man in Chiang Mai with Venerable Tong.
In
1975 he moved, in order to be with Ajahn Chah, staying at Wat Pah Pong and Wat
Pah Nanachat. He went on several tudong journeys through the northeast of
Thailand and the mountains of Chiang Mai, visiting many famous forest
meditation masters.
Venerable
Tiradhammo was invited to England in 1982 to help with developments there. He
spent two years at Chithurst Monastery, and three years in charge of Harnham
Vihara in Northumberland. In 1988 he helped establish Dhammapala Monastery
near Bern, Switzerland and also later
at its new location in the Bernese Alpine village of
Kandersteg
where
he was the senior monk until 2005. In July 2005 he assumed the position
of senior monk at Bodhinyanarama, Wellington, NZ.
